FAQ
What is Krav Maga training like?
Krav Maga training is a mixture of mental and physical conditioning. The physical training is both aerobic and anaerobic. The mental side is about mindset and tactics, understanding one's surroundings and knowing when and how to react in certain situations. The goal in each class and of Krav Maga in general is to teach mindset, tactics and techniques. The techniques that are taught include both defensive and offensive elements designed to protect you while inflicting maximum possible damage to your opponent to end the conflict quickly. The techniques are simple and instinctive.
Scenarios are incorporated to develop tactics, which result in understanding when to apply a particular technique. Training scenarios teach students to ignore distractions. Stress drills are incorporated to help develop mindset (and tactics). They might include blindfolding or exercising trainees to near exhaustion before dealing with a simulated attack, as well as training outdoors on a variety of surfaces and restrictive situations.
Training can also cover situational awareness to develop an understanding of one’s surroundings and potentially threatening circumstances before an attack occurs. It may also cover ways to deal with potentially violent situations, and physical and verbal methods to avoid violence whenever possible.
Students learn to defend themselves against attackers both unarmed and armed (including defenses against sticks, knives and guns) as well as against multiple attackers.
What's a typical class like?
Classes begin with a warm-up that typically consists of some light calisthenics. These will typically include exercises that will warm the student up for the particular topic being taught. Next, we might incorporate some fatigue and aggressiveness drills, which might include striking mitts or kicking pads. After the students are fully warmed-up, some defensive techniques would be taught. The class would then practice these techniques, and in time, stress drills would be included to make the practice of the particular technique more realistic. Safety is always our number one concern. So no matter what techniques are being practiced, safety comes first.
