Yoga
If you've never been to a yoga class, you're in for a treat! You'll quickly learn that it is a welcoming environment, that students are encouraged to respond to their body and avoid practicing "beyond" themselves, to keep breathing, and to focus on their own development and improvement rather than competing with the person on the mat next to them!
All of our classes will help develop your strength, endurance, flexibility, and (hopefully!) a calm and balanced mindset. Yoga classes are also a robust and rigorous workout: low intensity does not mean "easy!" However, not all classes are identical. Read on for a brief description of the two styles of yoga classes offered by FSY.
Hatha yoga is the most widely practiced form of yoga in America. It is the branch of yoga which concentrates on physical health and mental well-being. Hatha yoga uses bodily postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation (dyana) with the goal of bringing about a sound, healthy body and a clear, peaceful mind.
Vinyasa is a style of yoga characterized by stringing postures together so that you move from one to another, seamlessly, using breath. Commonly referred to as “flow” yoga, Vinyasa at FSY emphasizes stability and breathing, and between transitions poses are held for several breaths, similar to Hatha yoga. In other words, this isn’t an aerobics or “power” yoga class!
